Weed-powered digging machines

November 27, 2014 By Hannah Zwartz Leave a Comment

This week’s School Garden picture comes from Diane Turner at Raumati South School:

testing the caption

Chicken Little the digging machine, on a day trip to Raumati South school. Chickens are ideal for preparing beds as they eat weeds (including oxalis), aerate the soil with their forklike feet, hunt our slugs and snails that like to hide between the soil and the wooden bed edges, and add sprinklings of nitrogen-rich manure. This one even laid an egg, to the children’s delight.
